Enola Holmes 2 Story Summary
Enola Holmes (Millie Bobby Brown) has set up her own detective agency, ‘Enola Holmes Detective Agency’ after solving her first case. But she struggles to be taken seriously as society dismisses her based on her age and gender. They compare her to her father, brother, and her family name, Holmes. Her brother, Sherlock (Henry Cavill), unlike his sister, continues to be the more busy detective.
Dismissed and dejected, Enola has no option but to close her detective agency and go home. As she packs her bags and gets ready to leave town, a little girl, Bessie, enters her office and asks her to find her lost sister, Sarah. Enola jumps at the opportunity and seeks more information from Bessie about her missing sister.
Bessie tells Enola important details about Sarah while on their way home where she meets Mae (Abbie Hern) another match girl who appears hostile towards Enola. The missing girl Sarah has green eyes and red hair and loves reading.
Enola gets to know from Bessie that Sarah had a fight with Mr. Crouch when he accused her of stealing due to a misunderstanding. Bessie also tells her that the girls who worked at the match factory are called ‘match girls’.
To investigate further, Enola disguises herself and goes to the factory with Bessie, and registers herself as Hilda. She finds out that there were many girls who died because of the Typhus plague and the match girls are inspected every day before they enter the factory.
At the factory, Enola observes keenly to find any clues and creates a distraction to go into the main office in search of more evidence. She scrummages through one of the registers and finds red hair and figures out that possibly Sarah was in the room.
When Enola questions Bessie, she finds out that there was a fire that caused distraction at the factory and that the fire was at Mae’s station. From this information, she deduces that Sarah had entered the office when there was a fire and suspects Mae for Sarah’s disappearance.
Enola decides to follow Mae and finds out that she works a second job at a theatre called Paragon. While following Mae on the street, Enola suspects an unknown man following her. She finds Mae and gets to know that Sarah worked two jobs too – at the match factory and the theatre. Mae warns Enola to stay away and stop meddling in their lives.
Upon investigating further, Enola finds out from a man working at the theatre that a man who visited the theatre fancied Sarah and wrote her letters too and she finds one of those letters in Sarah’s makeup box. When Enola comes out, she meets her drunk brother Sherlock who also happens to be working on a case nearby.
From the strange poem in the letter Enola found at the theatre, she deduces a hidden address inside it – 28 Bell Place in Whitechapel. When she reaches the address, she finds Mae stabbed by someone and on the verge of dying. Mae tries to say something to Enola but before she could manage to say anything, she dies. Enola discovers a music sheet in Mae’s pocket and hides it in her sleeve when she hears someone coming from upstairs.
Inspector Lestrade (Adeel Akhtar) and Superintendent Grail (David Thewlis) arrive at the place and Enola suspects Grail might be the man who followed her on the street outside the theatre earlier.
Having found Enola at the crime scene, Superintendent Grail calls Enola a prime suspect. Before they could arrest her, Enola manages to escape and hides inside her brother’s house.
The siblings decide to share the details of the cases they are attempting to solve. Sherlock shares the details of the unaccounted money transfer case he has been working on. He tells her that only a brilliant mind can pull this off because Sherlock always has hit a roadblock in this case even with the leads. Enola tells him about the case she has been working on and the evidence that she has gathered. Sherlock figures out that both of these cases are somehow connected.
The money scam case that Sherlock has been working on presents an interesting message based on the evidence. He deduces that the main account number has a name hidden within it – Moriarty.
When Enola gets to know that the match factory owners are organizing a ball, she attends the ball and figures out that William Lyon, son of Henry Lyon, who was the match factory owner, definitely has something to do with the disappearance of Sarah as he was the one who had sent poems to Sarah.
Enola also meets Tewkesbury, her love interest at the ball, and asks him to teach her dancing. The two are drawn to each other and sparks fly again between them. He teaches her the basics just about enough to get a dance with William Lyon. At the ball, Enola figures out that the handwriting in the letter matches William’s handwriting.
At the ball, Enola meets a mysterious yet kind woman called Cicely who wants to talk to Tewkesbury, Enola’s love interest. Unfortunately, Enola gets arrested before she manages to gather any more clues.
Enola Holmes 2 Ending Explained
As this was no ordinary case, Enola finds herself in grave danger and her life hangs in balance. Sherlock worries about the threat to Enola’s life and seeks help from Edith (Susan Wokoma), Enola’s mother Eudoria’s (Helena Bonham Carter) friend. Before Enola faces the consequences of getting involved with unknown powerful enemies, Edith and Eudoria help her break out of the prison.
Grail does his best to catch them, but Edith, Enola, and Eudoria manage to escape. Enola goes back to Bessie’s house and examines the house, going over all the evidence gathered earlier, and figures out that the mysterious woman Cicely who she met at the ball was Sarah and that Sarah and William were in love and wanted to expose the truth about the match factory.
The real reason behind the deaths of match girls wasn’t Typhus plague but it was the white heads on the matchsticks, and Cicely was keen on meeting Tewkesbury because he was one of the influential people who could help her in exposing the factory owners.
Despite initially not wanting to admit her feelings for Tewkesbury, Enola finally accepts her love for him and both of them share an emotional moment. But Enola’s first priority’s still the investigation.
To further investigate the case, Enola goes to the match factory, along with Tewkesbury, and meets her brother, Sherlock there. Both of them get disappointed when they find William dead. Sherlock had earlier found out that William had broken into the treasury office and stolen the documents to gather evidence.
Though the whole evidence pointed to William, Sherlock figures out that they were being misled in the case on purpose by the real culprits. Sherlock tells Enola that the people who were responsible for all this were McIntyre and Henry Lyon. They used the white phosphorus even when they were aware that it was dangerous because of greed and didn’t care about the match girls’ lives at all.
The musical note that Enola had found with Mae was called ‘The Truth of The Gods’ and Tewkesbury gives valuable information to Enola that it means the top row of the auditorium theatre.
Realizing that the note actually is a map, Enola, Sherlock, and Tewkesbury go to the theatre where Enola finds the documents under one of the seats. The documents included the stolen papers from the factory and also the documents taken from the treasury by William.
Did Enola Help Sarah In Exposing McIntyre?
Sarah arrives at the theatre and confirms Sherlock’s findings and appreciates Enola Holmes for helping her. Sarah breaks down when she gets to know about William’s death. After Enola, Sherlock, and Tewkesbury manage to survive a dangerous encounter with Grail and his people, McIntyre arrives at the theatre.
McIntyre tries to get Sarah arrested for stealing the papers and for blackmailing him but Mira Troy reveals it was she who blackmailed McIntyre and left clues for Sherlock to unravel that she was the mastermind named Moriarty, who’s behind the money scam case.
Mira Troy was the under-appreciated accountant who despite her brilliance served under McIntyre for years. Her motive behind the blackmailing and scams was to be recognized for her brilliance, which no man ever did due to the rampant misogyny.
To everyone’s shock, McIntyre burns the documents, destroying the evidence against him in the process. Sarah exposes the truth to the girls working at the match factory and encourages them to stop working at a place that exploits them. Moved by Sarah’s speech, the match girls leave the factory and march toward their freedom.
In the end, using his influence at the House of Lords, Tewkesbury helps Scotland Yard arrest McIntyre. Happy with Enola, Sherlock offers her to partner up with him, but knowing that it will lead to her living under the shadow of her famous brother, Enola backs out from the offer.
Enola is happy with her own small detective agency and has Tewkesbury by her side if she requires any help in the future. Although Enola rejects Sherlock’s offer of companionship, she manages to arrange some company for her brother.
Enola sends a stranger who’s looking for a place to rent to Sherlock’s home at 221B Baker Street. Although not part of his plans originally, Sherlock eventually decides to welcome his new flatmate, Dr John Watson, to his home as he will require some company in taking down Mira Troy aka Moriarty, who remains on the run.
