Unlocked Story Summary

After a wild night out with friends, Na-mi loses her phone on the bus that is picked up by an individual.

The next morning she gets a call from the person who found her phone, asking her to collect it from the phone repair shop.

The finder of the phone, on the other hand, breaks the phone intentionally and attaches a tracker to it. He hacks the camera and microphone so that he’s able to keep track of Na-mi’s life.

Police find a body in the woods near a plum tree. Officer Woo Ji-man is immediately reminded of his own son, Jun Yeong who had run away from home seven years ago. He and his son used to go to the woods to plant plum trees and feed the trees. The close proximity of the body to the plum tree suggests a possible connection between Jun Yeong and the bodies, making Officer Woo Ji-man doubt that his son Jun Yeong might be the killer. Later, the police discover seven more such bodies near plum trees.

It seems that the person who finds Na-mi’s phone is in fact Jun Yeong. Jun Yeong stalks Na-mi to her father’s cafe and lies that he was a regular at the shop. He orders a drink from off the menu. He also plays a game on the phone which he knows that Na-mi also does.

Jun Yeong’s next few steps are laid down. He needs to separate her from her father, her best friend, and her boss.

Jun Yeong goes to the cafe again and initiates a conversation with Na-mi. This concerns her father who points out that it is too creepy that he shows up and acts like a regular customer and even seems to have the same interests as Na-mi.  He does not seem to think that these can be a coincidence. The father-daughter duo get into an argument over this.

Later that night, Jun Yeong send texts from Na-mi’s phone to her father calling him outside. When he does, Jun Yeong attacks him from behind.

Just when Na-mi is about to get a raise at her workplace, Jun Yeong posts from her account and sabotages her work and job. In the post, Na-mi is criticizing and letting out secrets of the company.

After this incident, Na-mi realizes that her phone has been compromised. She did not make the post but someone did. So, she gets in touch with Jun Yeong for help, not knowing that he is the culprit himself. He confirms that her phone indeed has been hacked. But before he leaves he exploits Na-mi into thinking that her best friend might have actually posted from her account.

Unlocked Ending Explained

Officer Woo Ji-man along with his partner has started the search for his son. They reach the repair shop where Na-mi had received her phone from. To their surprise, they find the whole area flooded and covered in paper with details of the seven bodies found in the woods. Amongst the paper they find, one is titled ‘8’ and has all the details of Na-mi.

Just then Na-mi also walks in with the police looking for the hacker. Officer Woo Ji-man informs her that it was indeed the phone repair person who hacked her phone. But dials down on the details and does not inform her about the related murders.

Na-mi and the police come up with a plan to get a hold of Jun Yeong.

Though Na-mi now knows the culprit, they decide that she’ll pretend to not know and lure him to her place.

That night she asks Jun Yeong to come to her place and check her laptop. When he is about to reach her place, the police go up to him and ask him to surrender. But to their surprise, it’s not Jun Yeong.

Will Na-mi survive?

The police drop Na-mi at her father’s place. Upon reaching there, she realizes that her father is not there. She hears the recording of the argument that she had with her father coming from one of the rooms.

She understands that Jun Yeong is in the house with her. She carefully navigates towards the sound and finds him waiting for her.

Upon being asked about the reason behind his crimes, the murderer just indicates that he happened to find Na-ma’s phone when she dropped it. Na-mi asks for her father’s location but he refuses to give it out. Turns out, her father is actually tied up in the bathroom.

He forces Na-mi to text the police that she’s doing fine. What he didn’t know was that she had told the police that she would be giving a call no matter what, eliminating the need for texts.

Finding something is wrong, the police arrive and they catch the murderer. It is revealed that it’s not Jun Yeong but the person they had got a hold of outside Na-mi’s house while they were looking out for the real Jun-yeong. The murderer reveals that he killed Jun-yeong and decided to frame him for all the murders that he committed.

Na-mi witnesses a police officer aggressively performing CPR on her father who had been drowning in the bathtub when they rescued him. In a fit of rage, she picks up a gun lying around and shoots the murderer in his chest. However, the murderer does not die from the gun wound.

In the end, Na-mi and her father survive while the police wait for the murderer to gain consciousness so that he can be questioned.
