You People is a witty rom-com surrounding issues of race and culture starring Jonah Hill, Eddie Murphy, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Lauren London, David Duchovny, and Nia Long. Directed and written by Kenya Barris and co-written by Jonah Hill, the film delves into generational gaps, and family and interracial relationships.
You People Story Summary
Ezra Cohen (Jonah Hill) is an awkward office employee, treated as a joke by his boss and often misjudged by others. The only way he finds a voice is through his podcast with his friend and business partner, Mo. They talk about race, culture, and their opinions on it.
Being the uncomfortable chap that he is, one day while getting off of work, Ezra mistakenly sits into Amira’s car taking it for the Uber that he called. Amira Mohammed (Lauren London) is a confident upcoming stylist who is not afraid to speak her mind.
Somehow, the two fall in love with each other so much so that Ezra takes Amira to meet his family. As expected, the meeting is uneasy with Ezra’s mother bringing up police brutality against black people as the topic of conversation and his father singing a headache-inducing song for her.
The meeting might not have gone as planned but Ezra is determined that his marriage proposal to Amira should. So, he decides to meet with her parents to get their blessings, but alas, he also finds himself blabbering about the interracial babies of Jesus. No, his parents are not the happiest after this meet and greet.
Ezra And Amira Struggle With Their Families
Ezra finally proposes to Amira and they both decide to get married. As familial rituals call, both families finally meet. The evening has a lukewarm start with getting to know the other’s cultural and religious background. Still, the discussion soon turns to the holocaust and slavery while each of the families tries to one-up the other on their struggles as Jewish and black people. The night ends in a disaster when Shelley (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), Ezra’s mother, sets Amira’s father’s (Eddie Murphy) prized kufi hat on fire by accident.
To get closer to each other’s family, both Amira and Ezra go on a short trip together with the other’s parents. Amira’s father, Akbar, takes Ezra out for a ride to an outdoor basketball court and encourages him to play along with a bunch of tall players in expectation of his future white son-in-law losing his face. He streams the entire game but to his surprise, Ezra soon catches up and plays well.
On the other hand, Amira is out with Ezra’s mother for a spa appointment together. Throughout the car ride, she had to sit through Shelly’s tone-deaf singing. Upon reaching the spa, Shelly calls out the receptionist, who she thinks is being racist towards Amira, only to find out that it was not so and both leave the place with embarrassment.
It’s finally time for the bachelorette party and Ezra and Amira are out with their buddies to have some fun. Akbar decides to join Ezra for his bachelorette in Vegas and Shelly joins Amira for hers. To Akbar’s dismay and relief, he finally finds some diet on Ezra. His friends let out his secret while high and tell Akbar that the last time Ezra was in Vegas, he indulged in heavy amounts of cocaine.
At Amira’s bachelorette, Shelly mistakenly pulls out the wig of Amira’s friend and gives quite a loud reaction. This creates chaos.
Ezra And Amira’s Marriage Ends In Disaster
Struggling and waddling, the couple eventually goes through their rehearsal dinner. But the cracks soon show when Akbar very honestly expresses his displeasure and tells Ezra how he’ll never be good enough for his daughter.
After the little wig incident, Shelly goes up to apologize to Amira and keeps on blabbing about how she read up about the culture and everything. Amira confronts her that since they met, Shelly has only thought of her as a token black girl and has never really seen her as a person. The situation soon turns sour and Ezra and Amira realize that they can’t go through this marriage as they belong to completely different worlds.
After the marriage broke apart, Ezra’s podcast has grown a lot in size with multiple listeners. Like always, Ezra and Mo are discussing culture and differences and Ezra admits that Mo was right when she said that White and Black are never cool. He expresses how wrong he was and how different the realities are.
Shelly and Akbar also listen to this podcast and realize how unhappy Ezra and Amira are and how wrong they are. They should have treated the two with respect. Finally coming to their senses, Akbar and Shelly plan to bring the two back together.
Do The Two Cultures Finally Unite?
Ezra Cohen and Amira Mohammed couldn’t have been more different when it comes to cultural and religious diversities. All these differences led to heartbreak and separation. Listening to Ezra’s podcast, eventually, Akbar and Shelly come to their senses and contact each other in an effort to reunite the couple.
Shelly forcefully drags Ezra to get her a pair of shoes where they bump into Amira and Akbar but as it turns out, it was all a scheme in order to bring the two together. Akbar apologizes to Ezra for not treating him with enough respect and Shelly apologizes to Amira for not looking beyond her color. But that’s not all for the surprises. The parents even planned for a surprise wedding for the two and the happy couple gets married and so do their families.
You People is now streaming on Netflix.
