Surfside Girls is about two best friends, Sam and Jade, who decide to spend their summer surfing. But instead, something bizarre happens and they end up investigating a mystery to save their town cliff Danger Point and their ghost friend’s ship – the Obsidian Flyer. They also find the hidden secret of the town’s ancient treasure.

Surfside Girls is a family-friendly show streaming on Apple TV+. An Apple original series, Surfside Girls stars YaYa Gosselin, Miya Cech, and Spencer Hermes-Rebello in lead roles. The supporting cast is played by Jacob Vargas, Catia Ojeda, Sonita Henry and Joseph Mesiano. The official synopsis reads “Sam and Jade are on the hunt to find hidden treasure in the town of Surfside – but they may have to stop trouble before it washes ashore. The series is based on the best-selling graphic novel series by Kim Dwinell.”

The Story

On a hot summer day, two best friends Sam and Jade are surfing on the Surfside beach when Sam finds something mysterious underwater. There is a cavern with an opening and a gold coin. Sam takes the coin and leaves.

The next morning, while the girls are prospecting around in the cavern, they are introduced to a friendly ghost – Remi. Remi is a young pirate in the parallel universe of ghosts. He asks for help from the girls to save his home – the Obsidian Flyer, a massive ship. The ship is disappearing progressively because of the crumbling town cliff – Danger Point.

Sam is obsessed with the stories about this ship and the hidden treasure of the Surfside whereas Jade is an extremely scientific person who loves logic and going to Sci Camp. Together they agree to help Remi and his crew.

The trio – Sam, Jade, and Remi are determined to solve the mystery of the Surfside Cliff Danger Point which has a cabbalistic connection with the disappearing ship.

Reasons To Stream

The series is a power pack of mystery and adventure which hooks the reader until the very end. Based on the graphic novel by Kim Dwinell, the series has a light storyline suitable for all ages without any foul language or sensual scenes. The series beautifully depicts the friendship between Jade and Sam. They always push each other to be better and marvelously complement each other.

The show also highlights the importance of family and friends in one’s life. Jade’s father lives abroad and the only way she has is video calls or voice calls to connect with him. On the other hand, Sam has quite a unified family who often eats together and has dinner table discussions.

The parents of both the girls are open-minded and they do not interrupt their children’s adventures. The conflicts between Sam and Jade add spice and intensity to the story. The ghost, Remi, is shown as harmless and friendly as someone who is hustling to save his house. He misses his family and is happy being friends with Jade and Sam. If you are looking for a show for your kids, then this would be the perfect fit.

Reasons To Skip

Even after a strong story and characters, the series would mostly be liked by children below the age of 10. The amount of adventure done by two twelve year’s old girls seems too good to be true. The ending is utterly plain and the director seems to hustle in connecting all the points.

You might lose track in the middle. There is no answer about where the treasure came from, who stole it, and to whom it belongs until the very end. You would have to observe every minute detail to understand all the clues.

The Verdict

The series is worth streaming. Surfside Girls is a fun series that is full of supernatural stuff and mystery. The scenes make sense as a touch of science is added to every element. The series is a great entertainment source for young and inquisitive minds.
