Disenchanted Story Summary

Giselle (Amy Adams) had her happily ever after fifteen years ago when she came to New York and found her Prince charming, Robert (Patrick Dempsey). They have been married ever since and live with their newborn baby, Sofia, and Giselle’s teenage stepdaughter, Morgan (Gabriella Baldacchino). New York isn’t the place Giselle hoped to be, and she misses the magic of Andalasia. In an attempt to find magic in life, Giselle moves to Monroeville along with her family.

Giselle, Robert, and Morgan live an ordinary life in Monroeville accepting reality. But Giselle isn’t satisfied and Robert feels his life’s just passing him by as he travels to and fro to work on a train. Morgan also finds herself dissatisfied with their decision to leave New York and copes with her resistance to change through sarcastic replies to Giselle.

Giselle meets Malvina Monroe (Maya Rudolf), one of the influential people of Monroeville who organizes Monroe-fest, one of  Monroeville’s biggest festivals. At school, Morgan bonds with Tyson (Kolton Stewart), Malvina’s son who seems to have a good heart.

Edward (James Marsden) and Nancy (Idina Menzel), Robert and Giselle’s friends, visit Monroeville and gift Sofia, their goddaughter, a magic wand along with a scroll. They claim that the scroll answers every question and that the wand has the power to grant the wishes of only a true son or daughter of Andalasia. When Giselle finds herself unhappy with living the not-so-fairytale life in Monroeville, she uses the wand gifted to Sofia by Edward and Nancy to wish for a fairy tale.

The next morning brings a surprise for Giselle as Monroeville turns into Monrolasia and she seems to have gotten her wish of living a fairytale – Morgan’s chirpy attitude, the talking animals that include her pet chipmunk, Pip, and her singing freely in the now beautiful Monrolasia. For a while, it seems like her wish has yielded her desire of having a happy fairytale that she so dearly clung to, but things don’t go as smoothly as Giselle expects.

From a sweet woman who believes in magic, Giselle transitions into an evil woman who thirsts for power, ambition, and greed. A gradual change in her attitude and mindset takes place that starts when she gets to know that Malvina Monroe is the Queen of Monrolasia. Lusting for power, Giselle grows ambitious of snatching the Queendom from Malvina.

Malvina announces the grand festival she will be having for her people at her castle in the evening. An excited Giselle takes Morgan shopping and buys her a new gown for the festival. But an evil curse seems to be at play and Giselle finds herself turning into an evil stepmother as well.

As a result of the curse, Giselle ruins her stepdaughter Morgan’s festival gown, stops her from going to the festival, and commands her to do household chores instead. When Morgan requests her to go to the festival so that she could meet Tyson, her love interest there, Giselle locks her up in her room.

Slowly, Giselle understands that with every passing minute the evil inside her is taking over. The scroll that answers all questions tells her that once the clock strikes 12 at midnight, the magic cannot be undone. She tries finding the magic wand but unfortunately, the wand gets stolen by Malvina’s minions.

During her transition, Giselle’s old self helps her send Morgan to Andalasia to find a solution. After Giselle sends Morgan to Andalasia, Giselle’s evil side takes over her and she has only one goal now – to become the Queen of Monrolasia.

Disenchanted Ending Explained

How Does Morgan Help Giselle Remember Her Old Self?

Meanwhile, Morgan finds herself in Andalasia and seeks help from Edward and Nancy. They tell her that the magic of Andalasia has taken a hit because the wish that Giselle asked for, was too powerful. Andalasia and the people in it will soon cease to exist if the wish isn’t undone.

The magic memory tree in Andalasia is on the verge of perishing, but when Morgan remembers her past with fondness, a part of the tree comes alive. Morgan decides to use the power of love and memories to get her mother Giselle back by helping her remember her old self.

Meanwhile, Giselle’s pet chipmunk Pip turns into a cat representing evil and helps Giselle by bringing the magic wand back from Malvina’s minions. Giselle goes to the festival and has a face-off with Malvina, and Giselle uses the magic wand to fulfill her wish of becoming the Queen of Monrolasia. Once Giselle’s wish of becoming the Queen is fulfilled, Andalasia almost falls apart and the two worlds, Andalasia and Monrolasia, start colliding.

Morgan and Nancy come back to Monrolasia by this time. Morgan has brought her memory tree painting that she made as a kid with Giselle. When Morgan gives the memory painting to Giselle, she tears the painting into pieces and scatters them. But the power of their love and memories helps Giselle remember her old self. However, it gets too late as she seems to start losing her Andalasian magic because it’s almost midnight.

Does Morgan Undo The Wish Before 12?

Minutes away from the bell tower clock striking 12, Robert gets the idea that if he destroys the clock hand before it strikes 12, then it could delay the magic or it can completely be undone. In the meantime, Malvina breaks the magic wand into two pieces and takes back the crown.

Giselle, back to her old self momentarily, tells Morgan to undo the wish with the broken wand. Meanwhile, Tyson accompanies Robert and they destroy the hand of the clock and stop it from striking 12 in the nick of time.

A doubtful Morgan hesitates to make a wish because she believes that she isn’t the true daughter of Andalasia but Giselle assures her that she indeed is the true daughter because she loves her just as much as she does Sophia. Morgan gathers her confidence and wishes to get her mother back and the magic from the wand takes over, returning Andalasia to its magical glory and Monroeville to its normalcy.

The next morning, everyone wakes up and Giselle and Morgan are the only ones who remember the events that happened because of their wishes. The others just think of it as a dream. Malvina and others make Giselle a part of the town’s committee, and she finally feels accepted as a part of Monroeville. Robert gives up traveling to and fro on the train to work and sets up practice in the town whereas Morgan accepts the changes and finds her happiness in her love interest, Tyson.

In the end, Giselle realizes that the small moments and memories she makes with her family, whether good or bad, are her real fairytale. So in a way, she does get her fairytale and accepts her life as is, realizing the magic sprinkled often found in smaller moments of life.
