In the Netflix offering, the classic tale of Pinocchio is being given a fantastical twist by Guillermo Del Toro, known for his fantasy films such as Pan’s Labyrinth and Shape of Water.

Netflix dropped its first teaser trailer for the stop-motion adaptation of the popular tale of Pinocchio. After five years in production, the first look of the much-awaited film was released in July. Academy Award-winning filmmaker had called it “a very very very personal movie” for him.

“It’s a story you may think you know, but you don’t,” says the narrator in the trailer as the grieving woodcarver Geppetto is seen bringing to life “the wooden boy”. The trailer teases a twisted take with the classic Del Toro touch given to the loved puppet boy’s tale.

Pinocchio will feature an ensemble star cast with Ewan McGregor as Cricket, Game of Thrones star David Bradley as Geppetto, Stranger Things sensation Finn Wolfhard as Candlewick, and Academy Award-winner Cate Blanchett as Sprezzatura.

The official synopsis reads:

Academy Award®-winning filmmaker Guillermo del Toro reinvents the classic tale of the wooden marionette who is magically brought to life in order to mend the heart of a grieving woodcarver named Geppetto. This whimsical, stop-motion film directed by Guillermo del Toro and Mark Gustafson follows the mischievous and disobedient adventures of Pinocchio in his pursuit of a place in the world.

Other members of the cast include Christoph Waltz, Tilda Swinton, Ron Perlman, John Turturro, Tim Blake Nelson, and Burn Gorman. The newcomer Gregory Mann will feature as the titular character.

The film is directed by Del Toro and Mark Gustafson, with the adapted screenplay written by Del Toro and Patrick McHale.

Pinocchio is expected to have a theatrical release in November prior to the wide release on Netflix in December.
