The Surrogacy follows the members of a wealthy and influential Mexican business family as a battle ensues to find the heir to the family’s powerful business empire.
Created by Araceli Guajardo and originally titled Madre de alquiler, The Surrogacy is a Mexican-language drama spanning 24 episodes and focusing on the Huizar family as a woman is forced to become a surrogate in an attempt to find the heir for the influential family.
The Surrogacy Story Summary
Julia (Marcela Guirado) and her husband Carlos Huizar (Luis Ernesto Franco), Nora Huizar’s son and the heir to Huizar Pharmaceuticals, are deeply desirous of having children. However, Julia’s infertility issues and the ban on surrogacy in Mexico present significant hurdles. Faced with a dilemma, Julia collaborates with a lawyer to manipulate Yeni (Shani Lozano), an unsuspecting young woman brought into the Huizar household for a specific purpose, using the power of money to strip her of agency.
One fateful day, as Yeni and her father Mubul embark on a journey, they are ambushed. Initially intending to abduct Yeni, Julia’s plan unravels when Mubul valiantly defends his daughter by thwarting the assailants, David and Balo, with his own firearm. Mubul hails from an impoverished background, possessing nothing but a devoted daughter who then works tirelessly to secure her father’s release.
Yeni, driven by urgent financial needs, succumbs to persuasion and signs a surrogacy contract. Julia and Carlos intervene, facilitating her father’s release from jail. However, now that Fernanda, Carlos’s sister, has delivered a child, the wealthy and domineering owner of Huizar Pharmaceuticals, Nora, pressures Julia to get pregnant. The Huizar family epitomizes the stereotype of indulgent, entitled, and greedy individuals.
Carlos and Fernanda find themselves at odds regarding the inheritance of the family business. Yet, Carlos’s primary focus lies elsewhere – all he desires is a child to establish a blissful life with Julia. Carlos begins treating Yeni with utmost reverence, ensuring her utmost comfort in his pursuit. Shortly after Nora accompanies Yeni to a medical examination, Marcella, a defiant physician and scientist employed at Huizar Pharmaceuticals, discloses to Nora that Yeni is carrying twins. Nora decides to withhold this information from Yeni, keeping her oblivious until the time of delivery. Marcella eagerly embraces Nora’s decision, as it aligns with her desire to depart from the company, although she must eventually break her pledge.
Yeni gives birth to a son and a daughter, but unfortunately, the boy is born with clubfoot while the girl is healthy. At this moment, the question arises: Can a physically challenged young man become a part of the influential Huizar empire? Nora strongly disagrees and takes a step further. She devises a plan to deceive Carlos and Julia, leading them to believe that their son, whom Yeni was carrying in her womb, passed away at birth. Carrying the baby, Nora abandons Yeni and the baby and exploits her power to manipulate Carlos.
Marcella discovers Yeni’s situation and with the support of her boyfriend Roberto and a lawyer, endeavors to help her. Meanwhile, Yeni reunites with Cuca, the owner of a dry cleaning shop where she used to work, and Cuca’s granddaughter Sonia. Together with Sonia’s partner Keyus, the group embarks on a journey for survival. Initially trusting Marcella’s intentions, Irene, the pharmaceutical company’s lawyer’s sudden death alters their perspective. When Yeni attempts to contact Carlos, it is Julia who answers, and Julia’s jealousy erupts as she angrily destroys the phone.
Yeni Becomes Victims Of Nora’s Devious Plans
Despite being left destitute and without any means, Yeni remains adamant about raising the boy as her own child. In the meantime, Ochoa, whose family suffered harm from Huizar Pharmaceuticals’ postpartum depression medications, launches a public campaign against the company. Faced with the repercussions of this lawsuit, the Huizar family resorts to their customary ruthless tactics that force Yeni to go into hiding. Yeni realizes that the clock’s ticking fast and she must protect her son at all costs.
However, it is later revealed that in the past, prior to Yeni giving birth to the twins, Nora had interfered in this situation. She harbored a deep dislike for Julia and always harbored a desire to remove her from the picture. Nora saw an opportunity to achieve this by ensuring Yeni lost the only embryo created by Carlos and Julia, thereby eliminating any chance of Julia becoming a mother.
Nora had secretly instructed the attending physician, Marcela, to administer a pill to induce Yeni’s abortion. Marcela, motivated by her own desire to leave the company, complied with Nora’s request. However, unbeknownst to any of them, there was an unexpected twist in the situation.
The embryo had actually divided into two parts, and the abortion had only affected one of them. Carlos had mistakenly assumed they had lost both children when the doctor informed him about Yeni’s abortion. This led him to commit a profoundly foolish act: initiating an affair with Yeni in hopes that she would become pregnant again, enabling him to adopt the child as his and Julia’s.
Yeni remained unaware of both the abortion and Carlos’ true motives for pursuing a relationship with her. However, Yeni manages to give birth to two children. Ultimately, Yeni gave birth to twins, one of whom was Julia’s biological child while the other belonged to Carlos and her. Naturally, all of these revelations came to light after the delivery.
Meanwhile, back in the present day, in an act of revenge for his deceased sibling David (who was earlier killed by Yeni’s father Mubul), Balo targets Yeni’s father, resulting in a tragic incident. Mubul is thrown in front of a moving vehicle, leading to his and the driver Francisco’s pregnant wife’s demise. Unbeknownst to Yeni, her story becomes intertwined with Francisco’s. Thankfully, Francisco’s daughter is saved and named Francisca.
Caught in a complex entanglement, Yeni finds solace in the presence of Francisco and seizes the opportunity to escape without hesitation. While Julia yearns to embrace her son, Tessa proves equally difficult for her to part with. Consequently, both women decide to keep their respective children to themselves. Meanwhile, Carlos remains oblivious, believing that Yeni perished in the explosion orchestrated by Ochoa.
The Surrogacy Ending Explained
Years later, Tessa and Francisca have matured along with Luciano, Yeni’s son. Yeni has been avoiding Carlos and the deceptive Huizar family as a whole. However, Yeni’s luck runs out soon. When Francisca posts Luciano’s video online and it becomes popular, she is compelled to tell Luciano the whole truth. Meanwhile, Fernanda and her husband Arturo are shown to face troubles in their relationship.
Nora saw traits of the Huizars in Luciano, the qualities she desired in her company’s future heir. However, she still saw him as an imperfect child due to his clubfoot. Learning that Tessa was Yeni and Carlos’ daughter eventually brings out her racist side. She plans to remove Tessa and bring in Luciano, who loved Yeni and knew part of the truth about his past. Yet, Nora couldn’t simply hand over the company to him. She had been grooming Tessa for years, and her sudden removal could lead to drastic actions for the company considering the media attention it would attract.
To proceed cautiously, Nora decided to stage Yeni and Tessa’s disappearance, leaving Luciano as the apparent heir to the Huizar empire. During Tessa’s meeting with Yeni at the park, Nora seizes the opportunity to enact her plan. Arturo is tasked with eliminating them, but things go haywire. Nico, Arturo’s son, tragically loses his life in the crossfire. Overwhelmed by guilt and grief, Arturo commits suicide in jail. Fernanda, who was trying to make amends, suffers the loss of her entire family. It feels like Fernanda’s past actions come back to haunt her as she induced her own abortion and influenced Julia to take pills that would prove harmful to her.
Upon discovering the unfortunate events, Nora, in her typical fashion, begins plotting the next moves for her company’s future. Tessa realizes that she can no longer idolize Nora due to her heartless attitude. As Nora realizes her family has turned against her and she can no longer manipulate them with her tactics, she resorts to her final option – Luciano. Nora plans to declare him the company’s heir, under the condition that he provides her with great-grandchildren. However, when Luciano reveals he is gay and intends to have children through a surrogate in the future, Nora’s prejudiced mindset is shattered, causing her to enter a vegetative state due to the shock.
Who Became The Heir To Huizar Pharmaceuticals?
Nora’s company succession plans followed legal guidelines. Finally, Luciano was named as her heir, with Yeni as his legal guardian until Luciano reached maturity. Meanwhile, Carlos was free to advise the company. Yeni’s rise to leadership over those who had discriminated against her can be seen as karmic justice. She addresses concerns of ability by introducing inclusive reforms and adequately compensating Huizar’s victims.
All the other divorced couples, on the other hand, are drawn to one another. The family starts to come together towards the end, as Francesco and Sonia initiate a romance with the blessing of Francisca. Even Julia discovers happiness with Keyus, finally fulfilling their long-desired connection.
After years of yearning, Yeni and Carlos embark on a deeper commitment in their relationship. Tessa begins to let go of her preconceived notions and accepts Yeni as her mother, gradually embracing their bond. Ultimately, the universe restores order, allowing everyone in the Huizar family to revel in a joyous and harmonious existence.
